How To Troubleshoot Enshrouded Server Issues

Running an Enshrouded server is a fantastic experience, but early-access games can sometimes throw unexpected errors. Most connection and configuration issues come down to a few simple settings.

Work through these common scenarios to get your MintServers host back online and running smoothly.

Configuration Resets to Defaults

The Problem:
You edit your server settings, but the enshrouded_server.json file silently overwrites your changes and resets to default.
The Fix:

Enshrouded automatically wipes your configuration file if it detects any invalid JSON formatting. To fix this, copy your settings text and paste it into a free online JSON validator.

This tool will point out exactly where you are missing a comma or quotation mark so you can correct the typo before saving the file again.

Server Crashes on Startup

The Problem:
The server process crashes immediately after clicking start.
The Fix:

This crash is almost always triggered by duplicate passwords inside your userGroups settings. To resolve this, open your configuration file and ensure every single group has a completely unique password.

Most importantly, double-check to verify that your admin password does not match your general server password.

Server Not Appearing in Browser

The Problem:
The server is running, but you cannot find it in the in-game server browser list.
The Fix:

The in-game browser can sometimes take 5 to 15 minutes to propagate new servers. While you wait, try checking the following:

  • Use Direct Connect: Add the server directly using your IP address as a reliable workaround.
  • Check Updates: Ensure your server is updated to the absolute latest version from your panel.

Version Mismatch

The Problem:
Players receive a version mismatch error when trying to join the game.
The Fix:

This error means your server is running an older game build than your players. To fix this, navigate to your MintServers panel and click the Reinstall Server button to pull the latest files.

Once the update finishes downloading, restart your server and your players will be able to connect normally.

Server Overloaded Messages

The Problem:
The server console or in-game UI displays a "Server Overloaded" warning, causing lag.
The Fix:

This warning is a known issue related to the game's current early-access optimization. You can improve overall performance by scheduling regular server restarts and reducing the enemy spawn rates in your configuration settings.

Additionally, encourage your players to group up in the same area to prevent the server from struggling to load too many map chunks at once.

Character Not Saving

The Problem:
Player character progress rolls back or fails to save upon disconnecting.
The Fix:

This is actually a client-side issue caused by conflicting Steam Cloud saves. To permanently fix this, have the affected players open their Steam application and go to their Library.

From there, they should right-click Enshrouded, select Properties, and toggle the Steam Cloud saves option to off.
