Is your Viking rubber-banding across the meadow? Are you struggling to open chests, or getting a frustrating "Failed to connect" error? Valheim handles multiplayer networking in a very unique way, which means network issues here often look different than in other games.
Let us break down how Valheim's network functions and explore some quick fixes so you and your friends can get back to conquering the Tenth World without the lag!
1. Crossplay and PlayFab Latency
Valheim features Crossplay, allowing Steam and Xbox players to play together. To do this, the game routes your connection through a third-party service called Microsoft PlayFab. While great for accessibility, this extra relay step increases latency and decreases reliability.
If you see errors like 4098 (Invalid handle) or 4133 (Network endpoint limit reached) in your console, the PlayFab network is likely struggling to maintain your connection.
Solutions for PlayFab Issues
- If all players are on Steam: We highly recommend turning Crossplay OFF. You can do this easily in your MintServers panel by going to the Game Settings tab and toggling the Crossplay setting to disabled. Without Crossplay, your game uses a direct connection to the server, which is significantly faster and much more stable!
- If you need Crossplay: Try staggering the times your players connect, or just wait a few minutes for the PlayFab network congestion to clear up.
2. The "Desync" Issue (Zone Authority)
If you notice that monsters are teleporting, trees take a few seconds to fall after you chop them, or chests refuse to open, you are experiencing Desync.
Unlike traditional games where the server handles all the physics, Valheim's game logic is distributed to the players. When you walk into a new area, your computer takes over the hosting duties (called "Zone Authority") for all the physics and monster AI in that specific area. If you have a weak internet connection, every other player who walks into that area will experience your lag even if the server itself is running perfectly!
The player who entered the area first is the one controlling it. If they have high ping, ask them to briefly leave the area and re-enter. This will pass the Zone Authority to another player in the area. Always try to have the friend with the strongest internet connection walk into dungeons or new bases first!
3. General Connection Drops
If you are still experiencing serious desync where you see enemies dead but your friends are still dodging their attacks, your local client has lost its synchronization with the server entirely.
General Connection Troubleshooting
- Quick Reconnect: Since Zone Authority relies heavily on client-side loading, simply logging out and reconnecting to the server is the most reliable way to force the game to fetch the correct server state.
- Use Ethernet: Valheim is highly sensitive to packet loss. We strongly recommend all players use a hardwired Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
- PC-Only Mods: If your server does not use Crossplay, you might want to look into installing performance mods like "Better Networking" to improve the data flow between the server and the players.
