Understanding Network Issues On Your Valheim Server

Is your Viking rubber-banding across the meadow? Are you struggling to open chests, or getting a frustrating "Failed to connect" error? Valheim handles multiplayer networking in a very unique way, which means network issues here often look different than in other games.

Let us break down how Valheim's network functions and explore some quick fixes so you and your friends can get back to conquering the Tenth World without the lag!

⚠️ Important Note: Before diving into advanced network troubleshooting, always try restarting your MintServers host and your personal computer first. A fresh connection fixes the majority of temporary network hiccups!

1. Crossplay and PlayFab Latency

Valheim features Crossplay, allowing Steam, Xbox, PS5, and Switch 2 players to play together. Console players connect using a six-digit Join Code, and that connection is routed through a third-party service called Microsoft PlayFab. While great for accessibility, this extra relay step increases latency and decreases reliability compared to a direct connection.

If you see errors like 4098 (Invalid handle) or 4133 (Network endpoint limit reached) in your console, the PlayFab network is likely struggling to maintain your connection.

🛠️ Solutions for PlayFab Issues

  • If all players are on PC (Steam): Make sure everyone is connecting with the server's direct IP address and port through the Join Game > Add Server screen, rather than a Join Code. A direct IP:port connection never touches PlayFab at all, so it's naturally faster and more stable. See our How to Join a Valheim Server guide for the exact steps.
  • If your group includes Xbox, PS5, or Switch 2 players: Console players can only connect using the Join Code, so this PlayFab hop is required for them and can't be skipped. If you hit these errors, try staggering the times your players connect, or just wait a few minutes for the PlayFab network congestion to clear up. Our How Crossplay Works guide covers the Join Code system in more detail.

2. The "Desync" Issue (Zone Ownership)

If you notice that monsters are teleporting, trees take a few seconds to fall after you chop them, or chests refuse to open, you are experiencing Desync.

Unlike traditional games where the server handles all the physics, Valheim's game logic is distributed to the players. When you walk into a new area, your computer takes over the hosting duties (this is called being the "Zone Owner") for all the physics and monster AI in that specific area. If you have a weak internet connection, every other player who walks into that area will experience your lag even if the server itself is running perfectly!

Solution for Zone Ownership Lag

The player who entered the area first is the one controlling it. If they have high ping, ask them to briefly leave the area and re-enter. This will pass Zone Ownership to another player in the area. Always try to have the friend with the strongest internet connection walk into dungeons or new bases first!

3. General Connection Drops

If you are still experiencing serious desync where you see enemies dead but your friends are still dodging their attacks, your local client has lost its synchronization with the server entirely.

🛠️ General Connection Troubleshooting

  1. Quick Reconnect: Since Zone Ownership relies heavily on client-side loading, simply logging out and reconnecting to the server is the most reliable way to force the game to fetch the correct server state.
  2. Use Ethernet: Valheim is highly sensitive to packet loss. We strongly recommend all players use a hardwired Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi.
  3. PC-Only Mods: If your whole group is connecting via direct IP:port rather than a Join Code, you might want to look into installing performance mods like "Better Networking" to improve the data flow between the server and the players.

Still Having Trouble?

If you have tried everything above and your server is still experiencing severe network drops or connection timeouts, no worries! Let's fix that together. Just open a support ticket with your server details and any specific error codes you are seeing, and our team will gladly jump in and run some network diagnostics for you.
