Adding mods to your RimWorld Together server is a fantastic way to introduce new mechanics, items, and factions to your cooperative colony. Unlike other games where you have to upload files directly to the server panel, RimWorld Together handles everything directly through the in-game interface!
Let us walk through how to synchronize your local mods with your server so all your friends can enjoy the same custom content.
Important Warning: It is highly recommended that you generate a brand new world save before adding large mods to your server, as changing the mod list on an active save can cause game-breaking compatibility issues!
Step 1: Install the Mods Locally
Before the server can use a mod, you need to have it installed and activated on your own game client first.
- Open Steam on your computer and navigate to the RimWorld Workshop page.
- Subscribe to the mods you want to use on the server.
- Launch RimWorld and click on the Mods tab from the main menu.
- Enable the mods you just downloaded by dragging them to your active list.
- Click Save and apply changes. The game may prompt you to restart.
Step 2: Configure the Server Mod List
Now that your game has the mods loaded, you can connect to your server and use the built-in management tools to dictate the rules for everyone else.
- Join your MintServers RimWorld Together server. You must be an admin to make these changes! If you haven't set yourself as an admin yet, check out our guide on adding admins.
- Once you are loaded into the game, press the ESC key on your keyboard.
- Select the Admin menu option.
- Click on the Mod Manager.
- You will see a list of the mods currently loaded on your client. You can now sort these mods into three categories:
- Required: Mandatory mods. All players must have these installed to connect to the server.
- Optional: Client-side mods. Players can join whether they have these installed or not.
- Forbidden: Banned mods. Players will be immediately rejected from joining if they have these enabled.
- Once you have categorized your mods, click Accept to apply the changes to the server!
Troubleshooting Mod Issues
If your friends are having trouble joining after you update the mod list, make sure their local load order perfectly matches the server's required mod list. RimWorld can be very picky about the order in which mods are loaded, especially core frameworks like Harmony.
If you run into any trouble managing your mods or need help resolving a stubborn compatibility issue, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and get it sorted out for you.
