How To Change The Difficulty On Your RimWorld Together Server

RimWorld is famous for its brutal storytelling, but sometimes you just want to relax and build a farm—or maybe you want to turn the threat scale up to maximum! By default, RimWorld Together allows each player to manage their own difficulty level in-game. However, if you are the server owner, you can override this and enforce a global difficulty for everyone.

Let us go over both methods so you can perfectly tailor the experience for your colony!

Important Warning: If you are going to edit your server configuration files, always make sure your server is completely stopped on your MintServers panel first to prevent your file from being overwritten!

Method 1: Changing Difficulty In-Game (Player Choice)

If the server is using the default settings, every player can choose their own Storyteller and difficulty level. This is great for groups where some players want to fight huge raids while others want to focus peacefully on farming.

  1. Join your MintServers RimWorld Together server.
  2. Once loaded in, press the ESC key to open the main menu.
  3. Click on Options, then navigate to the Gameplay tab.
  4. Under the Storyteller Settings section, click Modify.
  5. Choose your preferred Storyteller preset, or select Custom to tweak individual threat scales.
  6. Click Send Difficulty (or Accept) to apply your changes!

Method 2: Enforcing a Global Server Difficulty

If you want everyone to be on an even playing field, you can force the server to dictate the difficulty rules. You will need to edit the configuration file from your panel.

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Use the interactive file manager to navigate to your configuration folder. Follow this exact path:
  4. 📁 server (or your main server directory)
    📁 Configs
📄 DifficultyConfig.json (Click to edit this file)
  5. In the text editor, locate the "EnforceDifficulty" line (sometimes labeled as "UseCustomDifficulty" depending on your exact version branch). Change its value from false to true.
  6. Once enabled, you can safely edit the other values in this file to tweak your global rules. For example, you can adjust "ThreatScale" to increase raid sizes, or change "CropYieldFactor" to make farming harder.
  7. Click the Save Content button at the top right of the editor.
  8. Navigate back to the Console tab and click Start!

Pro Tip: If you just want to quickly toggle the global custom difficulty ON or OFF without opening any files, you can simply type toggledifficulty directly into your server Console tab while the server is running!

Troubleshooting Difficulty Issues

If you set the global difficulty but players are saying the game is still too easy or too hard, double-check your JSON file to ensure you didn't accidentally delete any commas or quotation marks. A formatting syntax error will cause the server to panic and reset the file back to its default settings!

If you are still having trouble getting your custom threats to sync up, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and get it sorted out together.
