How To Configure Your Project Zomboid Server

Ready to tailor the Knox Event exactly to your liking? Whether you want to make loot incredibly scarce, turn the zombies into sprinting nightmares, or just add a password to keep random survivors out, configuring your Project Zomboid server is super easy.

All of your server's settings are split between two main configuration files. Let's dive in and customize your apocalypse!

Important Warning: Always make sure your server is completely stopped before editing configuration files. If the server is still running while you make changes, your new settings will get overwritten and won't save!

Locating Your Configuration Files

Before we start tweaking settings, we need to find where they live in your server files.

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button.
  2. On the left-hand sidebar, click on the Files tab.
  3. Navigate through the file structure by clicking on the .cache folder, and then opening the Server folder.
  4. 📁 .cache

    📄 MintServers_SandboxVars.lua (Gameplay Settings)

General Settings (MintServers.ini)

The MintServers.ini file controls the basic functionality of your server. Click on this file to open the text editor.

Here are a few of the most common settings you might want to change in this file:

  • MaxPlayers= Sets the maximum amount of survivors allowed on the server at once.
  • Password= Sets a password required to join the server. Leave it blank for a public server.
  • PublicName= Changes the name of your server on the public browser.
  • GlobalChat= Change this to false to disable the global chat box.

Once you are done making changes, click the Save Content button at the top.

Gameplay Settings (MintServers_SandboxVars.lua)

The MintServers_SandboxVars.lua file is where the real fun happens. This file controls the rules of the world, from zombie behavior to vehicle spawns. Open this file in your text editor.

Here are some popular settings to tweak:

  • Zombies = Changes the overall zombie population (1 = Insane, 2 = High, 3 = Normal, 4 = Low).
  • WaterShutModifier = Determines how many days until the water shuts off.
  • ElecShutModifier = Determines how many days until the electricity shuts off.
  • XPMultiplier = Increases or decreases the amount of XP players earn (e.g., 2.0 for double XP).
  • Loot Rarity Settings: Scroll down to find settings like FoodLoot=, WeaponLoot=, etc. (1 = Extremely Rare, 2 = Rare, 3 = Normal, 4 = Common).

Make sure to hit Save Content when you finish adjusting your world's rules!

Starting Your Customized Server

After you have saved the changes in both files, head back to your Console tab and click Start. Your server will boot up using your brand new configuration.

If your settings didn't apply, double-check that you definitely stopped the server before saving the files. If you run into any weird syntax errors or the server refuses to boot, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and help you get your settings fixed up.
