How to Change Project Zomboid Server Version

How to Change Project Zomboid Server Version

Project Zomboid frequently releases updates to different "branches" on Steam. You might want to switch your server to the unstable branch to test new features, or stick to a legacy version for mod compatibility.

In this guide, you will learn how to change your server version using the Startup parameters.

Step 1: Set the Beta Branch

The version of the game is controlled by the "Beta Branch" setting in your panel.

  1. Log into your MintServers game panel and stop your server.
  2. On the left-side menu, click on the "Startup" tab.
  3. Scroll down to find the "Steam Beta Branch" variable.
  4. Enter the name of the branch you want to use. You can find a complete list of valid branch names here on SteamDB. Common examples include:
    • public - The standard, stable version (Default).
    • unstable - The latest experimental features (buggy).
    • legacy41_78 - Example of a specific older version.

Step 2: Apply the Change

Changing the text in the Startup tab doesn't automatically download the files. You need to trigger a server update.

Warning: Always create a backup before changing versions, as switching branches can sometimes corrupt save files.

  1. Navigate to the "Settings" tab on the left sidebar.
  2. Click the "Reinstall Server" button.
  3. Confirm the action. This will force SteamCMD to check the branch you set in Step 1 and download the matching files.

Step 3: Verify the Version

Once the reinstallation is finished:

  1. Go to the "Console" tab.
  2. Start your server.
  3. Watch the startup logs. You will see a line indicating which Steam branch is being loaded.

If the server crashes, double-check that you spelled the branch name correctly in the Startup tab.
