How To Add Admins On Your Project Zomboid Server

Managing a Knox Event survival community means you will eventually need some help. Whether you want full administrative control over your world or just need to appoint a moderator to keep the peace, assigning staff roles on your Project Zomboid server is quick and easy.

Instead of digging through configuration files, we can grant these permissions instantly using a simple server command. Let's get your staff team set up!

Important Note: The player must be actively logged into the server for the command to work! Make sure they are in the game before you try to assign their rank.

How to Assign an Admin Role

To give someone staff privileges, you need to execute a command through your server's live console.

  1. Make sure the player you want to promote is currently connected to the server.
  2. Log into your MintServers panel and make sure your server is running.
  3. Click on the Console tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  4. In the text box at the bottom of the console, type the following command:

SetAccessLevel

For example, if you wanted to give a player named SurvivorBob the admin role, you would type exactly:

SetAccessLevel SurvivorBob admin

Press Enter, and the player will immediately receive their new rank in-game! If you are already an admin yourself, you can also type this exact command directly into the in-game chat box by adding a forward slash to the front (e.g., /setaccesslevel SurvivorBob admin).

List of Available Staff Levels

Project Zomboid has several different permission levels built into the game so you don't have to give everyone full control over your server. Here is a breakdown of the roles you can assign:

  • admin: Has absolute full control over the server, access to all commands, and can change server settings.
  • moderator: Can kick, ban, and manage players to keep the community safe, but lacks advanced server configuration powers.
  • overseer: Has access to specific monitoring tools to keep an eye on the server environment.
  • gm: Short for Game Master. Primarily focused on events. They can spawn items, teleport, and control zombie hordes to create custom scenarios.
  • observer: Has read-only access to certain staff tools. Great for players who just need to monitor chat or events without interfering.

Using Admin Commands

Once you or your staff have been assigned a rank, you can start using server commands to moderate players, spawn items, teleport, or trigger helicopter events. Because there are dozens of different commands depending on your exact staff level, we highly recommend checking out the official Project Zomboid Wiki list of Admin commands for a complete breakdown of every command available to you.

How to Remove a Rank

If you need to demote a player or completely remove their staff privileges, you use the exact same command, but set their level to none.

SetAccessLevel none

If you type the command and get an error, double-check that you spelled the username perfectly (it is case-sensitive!) and that the player is currently online. If you run into any weird bugs or need help managing your community, just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in to assist.
