How to Update Your RuneScape: Dragonwilds Server After a Game Patch

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is strict about versions. A client only sees servers running the exact same build, so the moment Steam patches your game, an un-updated server drops out of your Public tab. Jagex ships hotfixes frequently and every patch note carries the same reminder that dedicated servers need a restart. On MintServers that restart is the whole update, and this guide shows how to do it and how to check it worked.

How Updates Work on MintServers

Your server's Auto Update setting in Game Settings is on by default. With it enabled, every start runs a quick SteamCMD check against Steam and downloads whatever's new before the server launches. There's nothing to download manually and no version to pick. If the game patched, restart the server and it comes back on the current build.

📝 Note: Leave Auto Update switched on. Turning it off means the server stays on whatever build it last downloaded, and you'll lose sight of it in the world list the next time the game patches.

Updating After a Patch

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and open your Dragonwilds server.
  2. On the Console tab, click Restart. If you'd rather give players warning, click Stop, wait for them to finish up, then Start.
  3. Watch the console. You'll see the Steam update check run, then the normal boot, ending with START SESSION - Success.
  4. Open the game and search for your world in the Public tab. It should be back within a few seconds of that line.

Your world file isn't touched by an update. The server downloads new game files only, and your .sav in SaveGames loads as usual afterwards.

💡 Pro Tip: A large patch can take a couple of minutes to download before the server actually starts. If the console seems quiet, give it time rather than clicking Restart again.

Checking the Versions Match

When you want to be sure rather than assume, compare the two version numbers directly.

Server version: it's printed in the first few lines of the log every time the server boots. You can read it at the top of the Console tab right after a start, or open the log file from the Files tab:

📁 RSDragonwilds
📁 Saved
📁 Logs
📄 RSDragonwilds.log (version is on the first lines)

Client version: launch RuneScape: Dragonwilds and look at the top-left corner of the main menu screen.

If the two numbers are identical, you're set. If they differ, restart the server once more. If they still differ after a restart, Steam may not have finished publishing the server build yet; that occasionally lags the client by a few minutes, so wait a little and try again.

Optional: A Daily Scheduled Restart

Because a restart is all an update needs, a scheduled restart keeps the server in step with the game without you thinking about it. Open Schedules on your panel, create a schedule such as 0 5 * * * (5 AM UTC daily), and add a Send Power Action task set to Restart the server. Step-by-step instructions are in How to Set Up Automated Restarts. Pick an hour when nobody's online, since a restart drops everyone from the world.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Update Problems

  • Restarted and the world is still missing: Check the version numbers as described above. If they match, work through Dragonwilds Server Not Showing in Server List? for the other causes.
  • Console shows a Steam download error: Steam's content servers hiccup now and then. Wait a minute and restart again.
  • Server takes ages to start after a patch: Normal for a big update. Let the download finish; the console will show progress.
  • Friend on a different version can't see the server: Everyone needs the same client build. Have them let Steam update the game.
