Keeping your Terraria server updated ensures compatibility with the latest features, while downgrading can be useful for specific mods. This guide will walk you through the process of changing your server version safely.

Step 1: Backup Your Data
Before changing versions, it is critical to back up your world and player data. You can do this in two ways:
- Backup Panel: Go to the Backups tab and click Create Backup. This is the fastest way to save your entire server state.
- Manual Download: Go to the File Manager, right-click the
savesfolder, select Archive, and then Download the resulting zip file to your computer.
Step 2: Set the Desired Version
To change the version, you must update the startup configuration so the system knows which version to install.
- Navigate to the Game Settings tab on the left sidebar.
- Locate the Terraria Version variable.
- Enter the version number you want (e.g.,
1.4.4.9) or typelatestfor the most recent update.
Step 3: Reinstall the Server
Once the version is set, you must trigger a reinstallation to apply the change. This replaces the server binaries with the version you selected.
- Go to the Settings tab in your game panel.
- Click the Reinstall Server button.
- Wait for the process to complete in the console.
Note: The reinstallation process usually preserves your folders, but the backup created in Step 1 is your safety net if something goes wrong.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting
I Cannot Join My Journey Mode Server
Since Journey Mode is similar to Creative Mode in other games, only Journey characters can join these servers. In order to play, create a new character in Journey Mode. Otherwise, consider switching the difficulty to a different setting in your world settings.
"Version Mismatch" Error
This occurs when your local game version differs from the server. Ensure your Steam client matches the version you set in the panel. If you downgraded the server, you may need to downgrade your local game as well.
Step 4: Verify the Version
After the reinstallation finishes, go to the Console and click Start. Check the logs to ensure the server displays the correct version number during startup.
If you have downgraded and the server fails to start, it may be because your world file is from a newer version of Terraria. You may need to restore an older world backup or generate a new world compatible with that version.
