How to Configure Your Aska Server

Aska keeps all of its server settings in a single text file called server properties.txt. From there you can rename your server, add a password, choose a game mode and, with custom mode enabled, fine-tune everything from monster density to the length of a year.

This guide shows you where to find the file, what every setting does, and how to set up the Steam login token (GSLT) that your server needs to show up in the server list.

⚠️ Important Warning: Always make sure your server is completely stopped on your MintServers panel before editing configuration files. If you edit the file while the server is running, your changes may be overwritten when it shuts down!

Step 1: Open server properties.txt

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Find server properties.txt in the file list. The file name has a space in it, not an underscore.

    📄 server properties.txt (Click to edit this file)
  4. Click on the file to open the text editor.

Step 2: Edit Your Settings

Every setting sits on its own line, written as setting name = value. Setting names contain spaces, so type them exactly as they appear in the tables below.

📄 server properties.txt
server name = My Aska Server
password = mysecretpassword
region = default
keep server world alive = true
  1. Change the values you want.
  2. Click the Save Content button at the top right of the file editor.
  3. Navigate back to the Console tab and click Start.
📝 Player Limit
Aska supports a maximum of 4 players. This is a limit of the game itself, so there is no setting in server properties.txt to raise it.

ℹ️ Leave The Ports Alone
Your server's ports are already set up for you. Leave steam game port and steam query port at their current values unless our support team asks you to change them.

Custom Mode Settings

To change how the world itself behaves, set mode = custom in your file. This unlocks the settings below. If mode is set to normal, these settings are ignored.

monster densityoff, low, medium, highHow densely monsters are spread across the world.
monster populationlow, medium, highThe overall number of monsters.
bear populationlow, medium, highHow many bears spawn.

💡 Pro Tip: The seed, terrain aspect and terrain height settings shape the world when it is first generated, so they cannot change a world that has already been created.

Example Configurations

Here are two ready-to-use examples. Copy the lines you like into your server properties.txt, keeping any lines you already have for settings not listed here.

🌿 Relaxed Co-op
mode = custom
invasion difficulty = easy
monster density = low
day length = extended
structure decay = low
keep server world alive = true
⚔️ Hard Survival
mode = custom
invasion difficulty = hard
monster density = high
monster population = high
day length = reduced
precipitation = 5
structure decay = high

Setting Up Your GSLT Token

Aska servers need a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) to connect to Steam. Without one your server will still start, but it will not appear in the in-game server list, so nobody will be able to find it. To create a token you need a Steam account in good standing that has a qualifying phone number and owns Aska.

  1. Open Steam's Game Server Account Management page and sign in with the Steam account that owns Aska.
  2. Under Create a new game server account, enter 1898300 as the App ID and any memo you will recognize later, such as MintServers Aska. This is the ID of the Aska game itself. Do not use the ID of the dedicated server tool (3246670), or your server will not be listed.
  3. Click Create, then copy the token that Steam gives you.
  4. Stop your server and open server properties.txt again.
  5. Paste your token after authentication token = on that line and click Save Content.
  6. Start your server. The token is only read when the server starts, so a restart is required after adding it.
⚠️ Keep Your Token Private: Never share your token with anyone. Use a separate token for each server, and if you think yours has been exposed, delete it on the Steam page and create a new one.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Common Config Issues

  • Changes not applying: Stop the server completely before editing, save the file, then Start it again. Settings are only read when the server starts.
  • A setting is ignored: Check the spelling and remember that setting names use spaces, not underscores. Settings from the Custom Mode table only work when mode = custom is set.
  • Server not in the list: Your GSLT is missing or was created with the wrong App ID. Create a new token for App ID 1898300, add it to authentication token and restart the server.
  • Server started a brand new world: Check that the save id line matches the name of your save folder, everything after savegame_. See our Upload an Existing Save guide.
  • Terrain or seed changes do nothing: These only apply when a world is first generated. Your existing world keeps the terrain it was created with.

Once your settings are saved and your server has restarted, your changes are live for everyone. Ready to jump in? See our Join Server guide. If you run into any trouble getting your configuration right, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly help you out.
