How To Change The Map On Your Unturned Server

Ready for a change of scenery? Switching the map on your Unturned server allows your community to explore new towns, find different loot, and build in fresh environments. You can easily switch between vanilla maps like PEI or Washington, or even install custom maps from the Steam Workshop by editing your configuration files.

Important Warning: Always make sure your server is completely stopped before making configuration changes. Editing files while the server is running will cause your changes to be overwritten!

Changing to a Vanilla Map

If you want to use an official map included with the base game, you only need to edit your core commands file.

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left sidebar.
  3. Click through the file manager to locate your Commands.dat file.
  4. 📁 Servers
📁 MintServersUnturned (or your custom instance name)
    📁 Server
📄 Commands.dat (Click to edit this file)
  5. Click on Commands.dat to open the text editor.
  6. Look for a line that starts with Map. Change the text after it to your desired map name (e.g., PEI, Washington, Russia, Hawaii, Germany, or Yukon). If the file is empty, simply type Map followed by a space, and then the map name.
  7. Make sure you use a single space between the command and the map name, with no colons or equal signs.

Installing a Custom Steam Workshop Map

Unturned has a massive Steam Workshop filled with incredible community-made maps. Loading them onto your server requires an extra step to download the files first.

Step 1: Find the Workshop ID

  1. Go to the Steam Workshop for Unturned and find the custom map you want to install.
  2. Look at the URL address bar at the top of your browser or Steam client.
  3. Copy the string of numbers at the very end of the URL. For example, if the URL is https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=123456789, your Workshop ID is 123456789.
  4. Make a note of the exact name of the map as listed by the creator in the description (e.g., Polaris or Arid). You will need this later!

Step 2: Add the ID to Your Server

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left sidebar.
  3. Click through the file manager to this path: Servers -> MintServersUnturned (or your custom instance name).
  4. Locate the WorkshopDownloadConfig.json file and click it to open the text editor.
  5. Find the section labeled File_IDs. It will look like a pair of square brackets.
  6. Paste your copied Workshop ID between the brackets. If you are adding multiple IDs, separate them with a comma. Here is an example of a single map ID:
"File_IDs": [
    123456789
  ],
  1. Click the Save Content button at the top of the editor.

Step 3: Change Your Commands.dat Map Name

  1. While still in the Files tab, open the Server folder (located in the same unturned folder you are currently in).
  2. Click on the Commands.dat file to open it.
  3. Look for your Map line. Change the map name to the exact name of the custom map you are downloading. Keep in mind this is case-sensitive!

Map Polaris
Mode Normal
  1. Click the Save Content button.
  2. Return to the Console tab and Start your server.

Your server will now take a little bit longer to start up the first time as it contacts Steam to download the map files. If your server crashes or loads the wrong map, double-check that you spelled the map name perfectly in your Commands.dat file and that the Workshop ID is correct. If you need a hand getting it running, open a support ticket and our team will jump in to help.
