Having your new Rust server fail to appear in the public browser is a very common issue for new owners. Thankfully, this is almost always caused by a simple configuration error or a slight network delay.
Work your way through this complete top-to-bottom checklist to get your MintServers host visible to the public.
1. The Server Boot Delay
- The Facepunch master server has a built-in listing delay. Once your console says the server is ready and fully booted, you must wait at least 5 minutes before it will populate in the public browser. Simply give it a little time!
2. The Server Is Outdated
- Servers vanish from the list the moment an update is released. Simply restart your server from your MintServers panel to trigger the automatic update sequence for Rust, as well as your Oxide or Carbon framework.
3. The Server Name Is Too Long
- Keep your server name under 60 characters and avoid using unusual symbols or emojis. The Facepunch browser will silently block excessively long or complex names from appearing to anyone.
4. Encryption Level Is Too Low
- Check your configuration or startup arguments for the server.encryption variable. It must be set exactly to 2. If it is set to 0 or 1, the server will not appear in the public list.
5. Regional Ping Limits
- The Rust in-game browser only displays the closest 5,000 servers to the player's physical location. If your ping is exceptionally high relative to the server, it will simply be cut off from your personal list.
6. Corrupted Steam Cache
- Navigate to your Files tab and safely delete the Steam/appcache and Steam/config folders on your server, then restart. This forces the server to generate a fresh connection to the Steam network.
7. Outdated Or Broken Plugins
- Ensure all your installed Oxide or Carbon plugins are fully up to date. If the server still will not list, try temporarily moving your plugins out of your folder to see if a specific mod is the culprit causing the hangup.
๐ ๏ธ The Direct Connect Workaround
While you are troubleshooting, you do not have to wait for the browser! You and your players can join immediately by pressing F1 in-game to open the client console and typing client.connect IP:PORT (replacing the text with your actual server IP and port), or by adding the server directly to your Steam favorites.
