How To Change Your Garry's Mod Server Map

Whether you want to build contraptions on flatgrass or explore a massive custom city, changing the map on your Garry's Mod server is incredibly simple. You can switch the map instantly while players are connected, or set a new default map that loads every single time your server boots up.

⚠️ Important Warning:
Before changing to a custom Workshop map, make sure you have properly added it to your server's Workshop collection! If the server tries to load a map that does not exist in its files, it will crash or get stuck in a restart loop.

Method 1: Changing the Map Live via Console

If your server is already running and your players are ready for a new environment, you can use the live console. This is the fastest way to switch the map without needing to restart the server entirely.

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and navigate to the Console tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  2. At the bottom of the console window, locate the text input box.
  3. Type the changelevel command followed by a single space and the exact map name. For example, to switch to flatgrass, type the following:
⌨️ Developer Console
changelevel gm_flatgrass
  1. Press Enter. The server will immediately load the new map and pull all connected players into the new world.

Method 2: Setting the Default Starting Map

If you want your server to always boot up on a specific map after a restart or crash, you need to change your startup settings instead of using the console.

  1. Log into your panel and click Stop to safely shut down the server.
  2. On the left-hand sidebar, click on the Startup tab.
  3. Scroll down until you locate the Map or Starting Map text box.
  4. Replace the current map name with your desired map (for example, gm_construct).
  5. The panel will automatically save your changes as soon as you click outside the text box.
  6. Return to the Console tab and click Start. Your server will now always boot up on this map!

How to Find Your Workshop Collection ID

To load custom maps, your server needs to know which Steam Workshop Collection to download from. Finding this ID number is super easy:

  1. Open Steam, hover over the Community tab at the top, and click Workshop.
  2. Search for Garry's Mod and go to its Workshop page.
  3. Hover over the Browse tab and click Collections.
  4. Find the collection you want to use (or create a new one) and click on it to open its main page.
  5. Look at the URL address bar at the top of your browser or Steam window. At the very end of the URL, you will see ?id= followed by a long string of numbers (for example: ?id=1234567890).
  6. Copy only the numbers. Paste this number into the Workshop Collection ID box in your MintServers Startup tab!
💡 Quick Tip
If you do not see the green URL bar in your Steam client, you can turn it on by going to Steam > Settings > Interface and checking "Display web address bars when available", or simply open the collection page in a standard web browser like Chrome!

Common Garry's Mod Maps and Prefixes

Garry's Mod uses specific prefixes to categorize maps for different game modes. When typing a map name into the console or startup tab, you must include this prefix. Here are a few common default and popular maps based on their game mode:

  • Sandbox (gm_): gm_construct, gm_flatgrass
  • Trouble in Terrorist Town (ttt_): ttt_waterworld, ttt_minecraft_b5, ttt_clue, ttt_rooftops
  • Prop Hunt (ph_): ph_restaurant, ph_office, ph_motel
  • DarkRP (rp_): rp_downtown_v4c_v2, rp_bangclaw, rp_rockford_v2b
  • Murder (mu_): mu_hotel, mu_lakehouse
  • Deathrun (deathrun_ or dr_): deathrun_family_guy, dr_minecraft

🛠️ Troubleshooting Map Changes

If your server fails to load the map or immediately crashes, double-check your spelling to ensure there are no typos in the map name. Garry's Mod map names must exactly match the file name, including the prefix (like gm_ or ttt_).

If you are trying to load a custom Steam Workshop map and it keeps failing, double-check that your server's Workshop Collection ID is set up correctly in your Startup tab so the server actually downloads the map file. If you need a hand getting a specific custom map running or setting up your Workshop collection, no worries! Let's fix that together. Just open a support ticket and our team will get it sorted out for you.
