How To Add Admins To Your The Forest Server

Need some help managing your survival camp? Whether you need to kick a rule-breaker or just want to have access to server management commands, logging in as an admin is a crucial step for any server owner.

Unlike some other games where you have to find and paste long Steam ID numbers into a text file, The Forest makes this incredibly simple. All you have to do is set a master admin password! Let us get your server configured so you can take control.

⚠️ Important Warning:
Always make sure your server is completely stopped on your MintServers panel before making changes to your startup settings or configuration files to prevent any data from getting overwritten!

Step 1: Set Your Admin Password

Instead of an admin list, you will create a single password that you and your trusted friends can use to gain admin privileges when joining.

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to shut down your server.
  2. On the left-hand sidebar, navigate to the Game Settings tab.
  3. Scroll down until you locate the Admin Password text box.
  4. Type in a secure password that is different from your normal server join password. The panel will automatically save your changes as soon as you click outside the box!
  5. Return to the Console tab and click Start.
💡 Alternative Method
If you prefer editing files manually, you can also navigate to your Files tab, open the server.cfg file, find the serverPasswordAdmin line, and type your password there before clicking save.

Step 2: Connecting as an Admin

Now that your server recognizes the password, you just need to use it in-game to claim your admin rights.

  1. Launch The Forest on your computer.
  2. Click on Multiplayer, then Join Game, and select the Dedicated (Internet) option.
  3. Search for your server in the list and select it.
  4. When you click Join, a password screen will pop up. You will see a specific input box labeled Admin Password.
  5. Type the password you created in Step 1 into this box and hit Join. You will load into the server with full administrative access!

How to Use Admin Commands

Once you are in the server, using commands is a breeze. You do not even need to open a special developer console.

  1. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to open the standard in-game text chat.
  2. Type a forward slash (/) followed by the command you want to use.
  3. Press Enter again to execute it!

To see a complete list of every command available to you, simply type /help in the chat. Here are a few essential commands to get you started:

  • /kick [SteamID] - Kicks a player from the server.
  • /ban [SteamID] - Permanently bans a player.
  • /save - Forces the server to immediately save the game state.
  • /shutdown - Safely shuts down the server.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Admin Access

If you have entered your password but the commands still are not working, double-check that there are no accidental spaces saved at the end of your password in the Game Settings tab. If you are still having trouble getting your admin permissions to work, no worries! Just open a support ticket from your billing dashboard and our team will gladly jump in and fix that together.
