Space Engineers has a fantastic modding community, with thousands of mods on the Steam Workshop. Adding a mod to your server only takes its Workshop ID and one small edit to your world's configuration file. Once it's set up, the server downloads your mods for you.
Step 1: Find The Workshop ID
- Open the Space Engineers Steam Workshop and open the page of the mod you want.
- Look at the web address in your browser. The Workshop ID is the number after
?id=. For example, if the address ends in?id=1234567890, the Workshop ID is1234567890. - Scroll down to the
Required itemssection on the mod's page. If the mod needs other mods to work, note down their Workshop IDs too.
Step 2: Add The Mod To Your World
- Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button.
- Navigate to the Files tab in the left-hand sidebar.
- Open the
configfolder, thenSaves, thenWorld:📁 Server Root (the main view of the Files tab)

📁 Saves
📁 World
📄 Sandbox_config.sbc (click to edit this file) - Click on the
Sandbox_config.sbcfile to open the text editor. - Find the
section. If it shows aswith nothing inside, replace that line with the block below. Each mod gets its ownblock:
Here is what each part means:
FriendlyNameis just a label so you can recognize the mod later. It can be anything you like.Nameis the Workshop ID followed by.sbm.PublishedFileIdis the Workshop ID.PublishedServiceNamestays asSteamfor Steam Workshop mods.
block to add another mod, change the ID in both Name and PublishedFileId. If you only change one, the server will not load the mod you wanted.
- Click the Save Content button at the top right of the file editor.
- Navigate back to the Console tab and click Start.
Keep an eye on the Console while your server boots. It downloads each mod from Steam before loading your world, so the first start after adding mods can take longer than usual.
Space Engineers stores each world's mod list inside that world's
Sandbox_config.sbc. Adding mods to SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg instead is a common reason mods seem to be ignored.
Joining A Modded Server
Your players do not need to install anything by hand. When they join your server, Space Engineers automatically downloads (and updates) the mods for them. The first join with a lot of mods can take a little while.
Removing A Mod
- Take a backup first, then click the Stop button on your MintServers panel.
- Open
Sandbox_config.sbcthe same way as in Step 2. - Delete the entire
block for that mod, fromto. - Click the Save Content button, then navigate back to the Console tab and click Start.
Servers set up for console crossplay cannot use Steam Workshop mods. They use mods from mod.io instead, and the
PublishedServiceName for those mods is mod.io rather than Steam.
Troubleshooting
A mod is not loading:Make sure you editedconfig/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc, and that the ID inNameandPublishedFileIdmatches the number in the mod's Workshop address. Also check the Workshop page to confirm the mod still exists, since mods can be removed by their authors.Server is stuck loading the world:This is often a mod conflict. Remove your mods one at a time to find the one causing it. The Console shows which mod was loading when the hang started.A mod works alone but breaks with others:Two of your mods may conflict. Check each mod's Workshop page for known incompatibilities and for any recommended load order.Custom blocks disappeared:The mod that provided those blocks was removed or failed to load. Add the mod back, or restore a backup taken while the mod was working.Mod download fails on start:Restart the server to try again. If the same mod keeps failing, it may have been removed from the Workshop or be temporarily unavailable.
