Factorio receives frequent updates, and sometimes you might want to try out the newest experimental features or roll back to an older, stable version so your favorite mods continue to work. Because your server and your personal game client must be running the exact same version to connect, knowing how to switch your server's version is essential.
Important Warning: Before changing game versions, we highly recommend navigating to the Backups tab in your panel and creating a manual backup. Loading a factory save in a newer version of the game and then trying to downgrade later can permanently corrupt your world!
Changing Your Version Variable
To switch your version, we need to update the startup parameters and tell the server to fetch the new files.
- Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to shut down your server.
- On the left-hand sidebar, click on the Startup tab.
- Scroll down until you locate the Factorio Version text box.
- By default, this is usually set to latest to automatically grab the most recent stable release. You can change this to match your exact needs. Here is what you can type:
- latest - Downloads the most recent stable version.
- experimental - Downloads the absolute newest test build available.
- A specific version number - Type the exact number (for example, 2.0.76) if you need to lock your server to an older build for mod compatibility. You can find a complete list of all released builds on the official Factorio download archive.
- Once you have typed in your desired version, the panel will automatically save your changes.
Reinstalling the Server Files
Now that the panel knows which version you want, you need to trigger a reinstallation so it can download those specific files from the Factorio servers.
- On the left-hand sidebar, click on the Settings tab.
- Click the Reinstall Server button.
- A warning prompt will appear. Confirm that you want to reinstall. Do not worry, this process only replaces the core game engine files. It will not delete your world saves, configuration files, or mods.
- The panel will take a minute or two to download the new version. You can watch the progress if you quickly switch back to the Console tab.
- Once the console says the installation is complete, click Start to boot up your server on the new version!
If you launch the game and still get a version mismatch error when trying to join, double-check that your Steam client hasn't auto-updated to a different version than what you typed into the panel. If you need a hand getting the versions to sync up, open a support ticket and our team will get you connected.
