How to Install Steam Workshop Mods on Your Avorion Server

Avorion has a huge Steam Workshop scene, and adding mods to your server is easy. Mods are controlled by a small file called modconfig.lua. Add the Workshop ID of each mod, start the server, and Avorion downloads everything for you.

⚠️ Important Warning: Always stop your server on the MintServers panel before editing modconfig.lua. We also recommend adding a few mods at a time so you can spot which one causes problems, and downloading a backup of your galaxy first.

Step 1: Get The Workshop ID

  1. Open the Steam Workshop for Avorion and find the mod you want.
  2. Copy the Workshop ID, which is the number at the end of the mod page's web address.

Step 2: Edit modconfig.lua

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click Stop.
  2. Open the Files tab in the left sidebar.
  3. Open your galaxy folder and click modconfig.lua to edit it:
📁 galaxy (your main server directory)
📁 Avorion (your galaxy name)
📄 modconfig.lua (Click to edit this file)
  1. Add each mod's Workshop ID inside the mods section, one per line, with a comma between entries:
📄 modconfig.lua
modLocation = ""
forceEnabling = false

mods = {
    {workshopid = "1234567890"},
    {workshopid = "2345678901"}
}

allowed = {
}
  1. Click Save Content, then go to the Console tab and click Start.

💡 File Missing? If you cannot find modconfig.lua, create a new file with that exact name inside your galaxy folder and paste in the example above.

What The Settings Mean

  • mods: Server-side mods, listed by Workshop ID. Avorion downloads them automatically when the server starts.
  • allowed: Client-side only mods, such as UI mods, that players are allowed to use. These also use Workshop IDs, written as {id = "1234567890"}.
  • forceEnabling: Keep this set to false. Forcing mods to load can lead to broken or corrupted saves.
  • modLocation: Leave this empty to use the default location.

How Players Get Your Mods

Players do not need to subscribe to your mods by hand. When they connect, Avorion downloads the required mods automatically, so the first join may take a little longer.

Removing A Mod

Stop your server, delete the mod's {workshopid = "..."} line from modconfig.lua, save, and start the server again. To disable a mod temporarily, put -- at the very start of its line instead of deleting it.

Troubleshooting

🛠️ Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Server finds 0 mods: Check that modconfig.lua is inside your galaxy folder, spelled exactly right, and that every entry except the last has a comma.
  • Mods not downloading: Watch the Console tab while the server starts. It shows each mod as it downloads, and will point to a bad Workshop ID.
  • Server errors after adding a mod: Remove your most recently added mod, restart, and try the others again one at a time.
  • Players can't join: Ask them to let the mod download finish before cancelling the connection, as large mods can take a moment.

Once your mods load, your galaxy is ready for something new! If a mod refuses to cooperate, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and get it sorted out together.
