How to Create a New World or Load a Save on Your StarRupture Server

Before anyone can play on your StarRupture server, it needs a world to load. This guide shows you how to create a brand-new world, or load an existing save you already have. Both are controlled by a few settings in the Startup tab of your MintServers panel.

📌 Note: You do not need the in-game Server Manager for any of this. On MintServers, your world is created and loaded using the Startup tab settings shown below.

Creating a New World

⚠️ Important Warning: Only enable [SERVER] Start new Savegame for the initial world creation, and disable it again immediately afterwards! If it is left on true, the server will create a brand-new world when it starts instead of loading your existing one.
  1. Log into your MintServers panel and Stop your server.
  2. Go to the Startup tab in the panel.
  3. Set [SERVER] Load saved Game to false.
  4. Set [SERVER] Start new Savegame to true.
  5. Start the server and wait for it to finish loading. Then:
    1. Join your server using its IP address and port. If you have set a Player password, enter it as well. Need help? See our StarRupture Join Server guide.
    2. Press ESC to open the menu, then select Save. This tells the server to save your world to the StarRupture/Saved/SaveGames folder, inside a folder named after your [SERVER] Session Name setting.
    3. Disconnect from the server.
  6. Stop the server.
  7. Set [SERVER] Load saved Game back to true.
  8. Set [SERVER] Start new Savegame back to false.
  9. Start the server. Your world will now load automatically every time the server starts.

Once your world has been saved, it lives in your server's save folder. If your Session Name is StarRuptureServer, it looks like this:

📁 Root directory (the first folder you see in the Files tab)
📁 StarRupture
📁 Saved
📁 SaveGames
📁 StarRuptureServer (named after your Session Name, your world is saved here)

Loading an Existing Save

Use this if you already have a StarRupture save that you want your server to run. A save is made up of a .sav file and a matching .met file. Both need to be inside a folder in StarRupture/Saved/SaveGames that is named after your Session Name:

📁 Root directory (the first folder you see in the Files tab)
📁 StarRupture
📁 Saved
📁 SaveGames
📁 StarRuptureServer (your Session Name)
📄 AutoSave0.sav (your save file)
📄 AutoSave0.met (its matching .met file)
  1. Log into your MintServers panel and Stop your server.
  2. Go to the Startup tab in the panel.
  3. Set [SERVER] Load saved Game to true.
  4. Set [SERVER] Start new Savegame to false.
  5. Set [SERVER] Savegame Name to match your save file (for example, AutoSave0.sav).
  6. Set [SERVER] Session Name to match your session folder name (for example, StarRuptureServer).
  7. Start the server.
💡 Pro Tip: Each Session Name has its own folder inside SaveGames. Changing [SERVER] Session Name points your server at a different folder, so it will not load the world from your old one. Download a copy of your save folder from the Files tab before you make big changes.

📋 Startup Settings Reference

  • [SERVER] Load saved Game: true loads an existing save, false skips loading saved data.
  • [SERVER] Start new Savegame: true forces the creation of a new world. Only use it for the initial world creation.
  • [SERVER] Savegame Name: the file name of the save to load. It must exist inside your session folder.
  • [SERVER] Session Name: the name of your session folder inside StarRupture/Saved/SaveGames.

🛠️ Troubleshooting World Issues

  • A new world is created every time the server starts: [SERVER] Start new Savegame is still set to true. Stop the server, set it to false and set [SERVER] Load saved Game to true.
  • My existing save does not load: Double-check that [SERVER] Savegame Name and [SERVER] Session Name match your file and folder names exactly, including capitalization and the .sav extension.
  • I cannot find the in-game Server Manager: This is expected. Create and load your world using the Startup tab settings in this guide instead.
  • I cannot connect to the server: Make sure you are using Join Game and then Dedicated Server in the game, with your server's IP and port. If you set a Player password, you need to enter it too.

Once your world is created or loaded and your players can join, you are all set. If your world will not load or you are worried about overwriting a save, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and help.
