There are two main methods to make someone an operator (OP) on your Minecraft server: using the server console or using in-game commands. Let us walk through both options so you can get your staff team set up.
Method 1: Console Method (Recommended)
This is the most reliable way to grant OP status, especially if no one is currently an operator in the game.
- Access your MintServers control panel and navigate to the Console tab on the left sidebar.
- Ensure your server is online and fully booted up.
- Type the following command into the console text box, replacing
<username>with the player's exact username:
- Press Enter. The console will confirm that the player has been made a server operator.
Method 2: In-Game Method
If you or another player already has operator status, you can easily grant it to others while playing on the server.
- Join your Minecraft server.
- Open the in-game chat by pressing the
Tkey (or your assigned chat button). - Enter the following command, making sure to include the forward slash:
Java Edition Permission Levels
On Java Edition, operators can be assigned different permission levels ranging from 1 to 4. You can configure the default OP permission level in your server.properties file.
- Level 1 (Moderator): Can bypass spawn protection.
- Level 2 (Gamemaster): Can use basic commands like
/gamemode,/give, and/tp. - Level 3 (Admin): Can use moderation commands like
/kick,/ban, and/whitelist. - Level 4 (Owner): Has full access to all commands, including
/stopto shut down the server.
🛠️ Important Notes & Troubleshooting
- Operators automatically bypass whitelist restrictions.
- To remove operator status, use the
deop <username>command in the console (or/deop <username>in-game). - Only grant operator status to players you completely trust, as they have significant power over your server.
- A server restart may be required for certain permission changes to take effect.
No worries! If you are having trouble granting OP permissions, just open a support ticket and our team will gladly instruct you on how to resolve the configuration.
