Fixing a Missing World or New World Every Startup on Aloft

Aloft is still in Early Access, and it's not uncommon for a game update to change how the save folder structure works. This can show up in two ways: your character or world seems to have disappeared after an update, or your server generates a brand new world every time it starts up. Both usually come down to the same underlying cause.

Why This Happens

Aloft stores its saves inside a numbered Data folder (for example, Data01 or Data06). When the developers push certain updates, the game can start using a new, different-numbered Data folder instead of the one your existing world lives in. Your server's Save Path setting still points at the old folder, so it looks like your world has vanished, or the server generates a fresh world each time it starts since it can no longer find your original save.

📝 Note: This is a known side effect of the game still being in Early Access, not a MintServers issue. It's worth checking Aloft's Steam update notes or community forum after any update to see if this specific change is mentioned.

Step 1: Check Your Data Folder

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and Stop your server.
  2. Go to the Files tab and navigate to:
📁 .wine
📁 drive_c
📁 users
📁 container
📁 AppData
📁 LocalLow
📁 Astrolabe Interactive
📁 Aloft (you are here)
  1. Note the number on the Data folder (or folders) you see here. If your world previously worked, there may be more than one, for example an older Data01 alongside a newer Data06.

Step 2: Compare It to Your Save Path

  1. Go to your server's configuration page in the Game Settings tab.
  2. Check the Save Path field and note which Data number it currently points to.
  3. Compare it to the folder number(s) you found in Step 1.
💡 Pro Tip: For a full breakdown of the Save Path field and everything else on the configuration page, check out our Aloft server settings guide.

Step 3: Fix a Mismatch

If the Save Path is pointing at a different Data folder than the one containing your world, that mismatch is the cause.

  1. Open the Data folder that contains your original Saves folder and world files.
  2. Update the Save Path field to point to that folder instead.
  3. Save your changes and start your server.
⚠️ Important Warning: Migrating a save between Data folder versions doesn't always work. Since this depends on what changed in the specific game update, results can vary and success isn't guaranteed.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

  • A new world still generates after fixing Save Path: Double-check the Map Name field also still matches your original world's folder name.
  • Only one Data folder exists and it's empty: Your save may not be recoverable if the update itself altered the save format. Check the game's Steam update notes for details on that specific update.
  • Not sure which Data folder is the right one: The correct folder is the one containing a Saves subfolder with your w_ world folder inside it.

Since Aloft is still in Early Access, save-breaking changes like this can happen with future updates too, so it's worth keeping an eye on the game's patch notes. If you've gone through these steps and still can't recover your world, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will take a look.
