How to Add Admins to Your SCP: Secret Laboratory Server

Running a facility is a lot easier with a few trusted staff to help you out! In SCP: Secret Laboratory, admins are set up through the Remote Admin system, which lets you kick, ban, and manage rounds right from inside the game.

To grant these permissions, we just need to edit one config file. Let us get your admins set up and ready to roll!

⚠️ Important Warning: Always make sure your server is completely stopped on your MintServers panel before making any file edits. If you edit the file while the server is running, the game will overwrite your changes when it shuts down!

Step 1: Finding The Steam64 IDs

Before editing the server files, you will need the Steam64 ID for each player you want to make an admin. This is a long number unique to their Steam account.

💡 Pro Tip: You can easily find a Steam64 ID by copying the player's Steam profile link and pasting it into any online Steam ID Lookup tool. It will usually start with the numbers 7656...

Step 2: Accessing The Remote Admin File

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Use the interactive file manager to open the folders below:
  4. 📁 server (or your main server directory)
    📁 .config
    📁 SCP Secret Laboratory
    📁 config
📁 (a folder named after your server's port, for example 7777)
📄 config_remoteadmin.txt (Click to edit this file)
  5. Click on the config_remoteadmin.txt file to open the text editor.

The folder is named after your server's port, which is the number after the colon in your server's address. If you see more than one port folder, make sure you open the one that matches your server.

Step 3: Adding Your Admins

At the top of the file you will find the Members section. This is where you assign each player to a role.

  1. Remove any placeholder IDs from the example lines. The file will not work while they are still there.
  2. Add one line per admin, using their Steam64 ID followed by @steam:, a space, and the role name. Keep a space before and after the dash at the start of each line. It should look exactly like this example:
📄 config_remoteadmin.txt
Members:
 - 76561198000000001@steam: owner
 - 76561198000000002@steam: admin
 - 76561198000000003@steam: moderator

The default file comes with the roles owner, admin, and moderator. Use owner for yourself and only hand out the higher roles to people you fully trust.

⚠️ Formatting Is Strict: This file is extremely sensitive. A missing space, comma, or dash can silently break a role with no error message, so copy the spacing of the existing example lines exactly.

Step 4: Saving And Testing

  1. Click the Save Content button at the top right of the file editor.
  2. Navigate back to the Console tab and click Start.
  3. Join your server and press the M key to open the Remote Admin panel. If it opens, you are all set!

Optional: Changing What Each Role Can Do

Further down in the same file, the permission section decides which roles can use each admin feature. Each permission lists the roles allowed to use it inside square brackets:

📄 config_remoteadmin.txt
 - AdminChat: [owner, admin, moderator]
  • Keep a space before and after the dash at the start of the line.
  • Keep one space after the permission name and its colon.
  • Follow every role except the last with a comma and a space.

You can find the full list of permissions in the official SCP: SL Remote Admin Permissions Guide.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Admin Issues

  • Roles are not being assigned: The most common cause is placeholder IDs still being in the file. Remove them, then double-check that each Steam64 ID is followed by @steam:.
  • Admin commands stopped working after an edit: Compare your lines against the example format above, paying close attention to spaces, dashes, and commas.
  • My changes did not save: Make sure the server was stopped while you edited, and that you edited the folder that matches your server's port.
  • The M key does nothing: Double-check that your Steam64 ID was entered without any extra spaces, and that you saved the file while the server was stopped.

Your new admins are now ready to keep the facility in order! For more on where the rest of your config files live, take a look at our Configure Server guide. If you run into any trouble getting the formatting right, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and get it sorted out together.
