By default, anyone who knows your server's IP address and port can join it. Setting a password stops that. A StarRupture server uses two passwords: an Admin password for managing the server, and a Player password that your players enter to join. This guide shows you how to set both.
Automatic Setup (Recommended)
If you set the [SERVER] Admin Password and [SERVER] Player Password variables in the Startup tab before installing the server, the password files are created for you automatically during installation.
- Log into your MintServers panel and go to the Startup tab.
- Enter your chosen Admin password in
[SERVER] Admin Password. - Enter your chosen Player password in
[SERVER] Player Password. - Install the server. The password files are created automatically.
This only happens during installation. If your server is already installed, use the manual setup below instead.
Manual Setup
If you did not set passwords during installation, you can create the password files yourself. StarRupture does not accept plain text passwords, so you first need to generate encrypted versions with a free online tool.
- Log into your MintServers panel and Stop your server.
- Visit StarRupture Password Encryptor.
- Enter your Admin password and your Player password, then click Encrypt.
- Click Copy Password.json to copy the generated Admin password content. Do not use the "Copy Hash Only" button.
- Back in your panel, open the Files tab. Stay in the root directory, which is the first folder you see.
- Create a new file named
Password.jsonin the root directory, paste the content you copied, and click Save Content. - Go back to the encryptor tool and click Copy PlayerPassword.json.
- Create a second file named
PlayerPassword.jsonin the root directory, paste the content, and click Save Content. - Start your server.
When you are done, your root directory should contain both files:
📁 Root directory (the first folder you see in the Files tab)
📄 Password.json (Admin password)
📄 PlayerPassword.json (Player password)
Joining a Password-Protected Server
Your players join the same way as always. In the game, click Join Game, then Dedicated Server, and enter your server's IP and port along with the Player password. Need the full walkthrough? See our StarRupture Join Server guide.
Resetting or Changing a Password
To change a password, delete its file and create a new one using the manual setup above. Deleting these files only resets your passwords and does not remove your world.
- Stop your server.
- Open the Files tab and stay in the root directory.
- Delete
Password.jsonto reset the Admin password, or deletePlayerPassword.jsonto reset the Player password. - Follow the Manual Setup steps above to create the new file, then Start your server.
Remember that if PlayerPassword.json is deleted and not replaced, anyone with your IP and port can join again.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Password Issues
Players can still join without a password:Make surePlayerPassword.jsonis in the root directory (not inside the StarRupture folder), the name is spelled exactly like that, and you restarted the server after creating it.The correct password is rejected:The file must contain the content generated from that exact password. Generate it again with the encryptor tool and replace the file's contents. The file content looks wrong:Use the "Copy Password.json" and "Copy PlayerPassword.json" buttons, not "Copy Hash Only", and paste the content into the file without adding anything else.Forgot a password:Passwords cannot be read back from the files, so use the reset steps above to set a new one.
With your passwords set, your StarRupture server is protected and only the people you share the Player password with can join. If you run into any trouble getting the password files working, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly help you get it sorted out.
