How to Configure Your Necesse Server

Necesse splits its configuration across two files: server.cfg handles connection-level settings like your port and password, while worldSettings.cfg controls gameplay for an individual world, things like difficulty, raids, and death penalties. This guide breaks down both files field by field.

⚠️ Important Warning: Always Stop your server on the MintServers panel before editing either file. Necesse rewrites both on shutdown, and any changes made while the server is running will be overwritten and lost.

Editing server.cfg

  1. Log into your MintServers panel and Stop your server.
  2. Go to the Files tab and open server.cfg, located in your server's cfg folder.
  3. Edit the values you need, save the file, then Start your server.

📄 server.cfg (connection settings)

server.cfg uses a single SERVER = { } block:

📄 server.cfg
SERVER = {
    port = 14159,
    slots = 10,
    password = "",
    maxClientLatencySeconds = 30,
    pauseWhenEmpty = true,
    giveClientsPower = true,
    logging = true,
    language = en,
    zipSaves = true,
    MOTD = ""
}
  • port — The UDP port players connect through. Default is 14159.
  • slots — Maximum number of players, from 1 to 250.
  • password — Password required to join. Leave as "" for no password.
  • maxClientLatencySeconds — How long a laggy client is tolerated before being disconnected.
  • pauseWhenEmpty — When true, the world pauses while no players are connected, so crops, settlers, and time stop progressing.
  • giveClientsPower — When true, connected clients get more control over their own hit detection and position, useful for reducing desync. Some hosts recommend disabling this on public servers.
  • logging — When true, creates a log file for each server session.
  • language — Sets the server's language for log messages.
  • zipSaves — When true, compresses save files.
  • MOTD — Message of the day shown to players when they join.

Editing worldSettings.cfg

Gameplay settings live in a separate file inside your world's save folder, not in server.cfg.

  1. Stop your server if it's running.
  2. In the Files tab, navigate to your world's save folder and open worldSettings.cfg.
  3. Edit your values, save, then Start your server.

WORLDSETTINGS = {
    allowCheats = false,
    difficulty = CLASSIC,
    deathPenalty = DROP_MATS,
    raidFrequency = OCCASIONALLY,
    playerHunger = true,
    disableMobSpawns = false,
    forcedPvP = false,
    unloadSettlements = false,
    maxSettlementsPerPlayer = -1,
    dayTimeMod = 1.0,
    nightTimeMod = 1.0
}
  • allowCheats — Whether cheat commands are enabled on this world. Turning this on disables achievements and cannot be reversed.
  • difficulty — One of five difficulty levels (for example CLASSIC), affecting damage taken and knockback.
  • deathPenalty — What a player loses on death. Confirmed values include NONE (keep everything) and DROP_MATS (drop materials); there are five options in total.
  • raidFrequency — How often hostile raids occur, confirmed value OCCASIONALLY shown above; there are four frequency options in total.
  • playerHunger — When true, adds a hunger bar that requires players to keep their character fed.
  • disableMobSpawns — When true, stops mobs from spawning.
  • forcedPvP — When true, PvP is always enabled between players.
  • unloadSettlements — Controls whether settlements unload when no players are nearby.
  • maxSettlementsPerPlayer — Caps how many settlements a single player can own. -1 means unlimited.
  • dayTimeMod / nightTimeMod — Multipliers for how long day and night last, up to a max of 10.
📌 Note: Most of these gameplay settings can also be changed live without editing any file, using in-game or console commands like /difficulty, /deathpenalty, and /raids. See our Necesse Server and Chat Commands article for the full list.

Setting Up Admins

Necesse doesn't use a separate admin file, permissions are granted entirely through the /permissions command:

  1. Make sure the player you want to promote is online and connected to your server.
  2. From the Console tab on your MintServers panel, or in-game chat if you're already an Owner, run /permissions set , replacing with User, Moderator, Admin, Owner, or Server.

The change applies immediately, no restart needed.

💡 Pro Tip: Player names are case-sensitive for the /permissions command. If you're unsure of the exact spelling on file, run /permissions list first to check.

That covers the full range of server and world configuration. If a setting isn't behaving the way you expect after saving, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly take a look.
