Adding Custom Maps to Your Killing Floor 2 Server

Killing Floor 2 supports custom maps from the Steam Workshop, on top of the maps that ship with the game. There are two ways to get one onto your server: an automatic Workshop download, or uploading the map file yourself. This guide covers both, plus the steps needed afterward to make the map actually playable.

⚠️ Important Warning: Always stop your server on your MintServers panel before editing config files or uploading map files. Killing Floor 2 writes its settings back to these files on shutdown, so editing while it's running means your changes get overwritten.

Method 1: Steam Workshop (Automatic Download)

This is the official method: your server downloads the map itself once it's subscribed.

  1. Subscribe to the map on its Steam Workshop page and note the Workshop ID from the URL (the number after id=).
  2. Stop your server and open KFEngine.ini in KFGame/Config.
  3. Under [OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.KFWorkshopSteamworks], add a line for the map:
📄 KFEngine.ini
[OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.KFWorkshopSteamworks]
ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems=123456789
  1. Confirm [IpDrv.TcpNetDriver] lists DownloadManagers=OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.SteamWorkshopDownload as its first entry, so players can download the map too.
  2. Save and start your server. It will fetch the map on startup.
  3. Once downloaded, browse to KFGame/Cache, then the folder matching your Workshop ID, then 0/BrewedPC. You'll find the map's .kfm file there — note its exact name, you'll need it for the next steps.

📘 Note: Automatic Workshop downloads on Killing Floor 2 dedicated servers have a history of being unreliable, and there have been reports of newer or recently updated Workshop items failing to sync to the server at all. If your map won't download after a few tries, skip to Method 2 below.

Method 2: Manual Upload (Fallback)

If the automatic download isn't working, you can grab the map file yourself and upload it directly.

  1. On your own computer, subscribe to the map on its Steam Workshop page and let Steam download it.
  2. Open your Steam installation folder and browse to steamapps/workshop/content/232090/, then the folder matching the map's Workshop ID.
  3. Inside, open the BrewedPC folder. You'll find the map's .kfm file there.
  4. On your MintServers panel, stop your server and go to the Files tab.
  5. Browse to KFGame/BrewedPC/Maps and upload the .kfm file there.

Registering the Map

Whichever method you used, the server needs a matching entry in KFGame.ini before it recognizes the map or shows it in WebAdmin. Open the file and add a data store block using the map's exact name:

📄 KFGame.ini
[KF-YourMapName KFMapSummary]
MapName=KF-YourMapName
ScreenshotPathName=UI_MapPreview_TEX.UI_MapPreview_Placeholder

Replace KF-YourMapName with your map's actual name in both places, including the section header. Get this wrong and the server won't recognize the map.

Adding It to Your Map Cycle

Registering the map makes it available, but it won't be played automatically until it's in your map cycle. Add it to the GameMapCycles list in the same file, alongside your other maps:

📄 KFGame.ini
[KFGame.KFGameInfo]
bUseMapList=True
GameMapCycles=(Maps=("KF-BurningParis","KF-BioticsLab","KF-Outpost","KF-YourMapName"))

Save the file and restart your server. For more on map cycles and other core settings, see our guide on configuring your Killing Floor 2 server.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

  • Map won't download automatically: Try Method 2 (manual upload) instead — this is the more reliable option if Workshop syncing is acting up.
  • Map doesn't show in WebAdmin: Double-check you've added the data store entry in KFGame.ini with the exact map name.
  • Players get "downloading package failed" errors: The map name in your data store entry or map cycle likely doesn't exactly match the .kfm filename. Names are case-sensitive.
  • Too many maps causing instability: Keeping your server under roughly 500 maps in rotation helps avoid stability issues.

Once your map is registered and in the cycle, it'll show up right alongside the default maps. If you get stuck anywhere in the process, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly help you get it working.
