Guide To Minecraft Gamerules: All Rules Explained

Gamerules change how your Minecraft world works, no mods needed. Freeze time, stop creepers from wrecking builds, keep your items when you die, and much more.

Check
/gamerule [rule] shows its value

Values are true, false or a number. Each world keeps its own gamerules, so changing one world does not affect the others.

💡 Bedrock Players: Cheats must be on to use /gamerule. See how to enable cheats. You can skip any rule marked Java only.

Change Gamerules From Your Panel

  1. In the left sidebar, under Tools, click World Manager.
  2. Under Your worlds, find your world. Have more than one? Pick it from the list at the top.
  3. Click Game Rules on the world's card, next to Download.

Java 1.21.11 and Newer: Gamerule Names Changed

In Java 1.21.11 and the newer 26.x versions, every gamerule was renamed to snake_case. For example, keepInventory became keep_inventory (the minecraft: prefix is optional). This change is Java only.

⚠️ Check Your Version First:
Old names do not work on 1.21.11+, and new names do not work on older versions. Type /gamerule with no rule name to see every name your server accepts.

The rule cards below use the old names. This table covers the names that changed the most:

Old Name (1.21.10 and earlier)New Name (1.21.11+ / Version 26.x)Notes

⚠️ These Three Flipped:
The new rules mean the opposite, so do not copy the old value across.
  • disableElytraMovementCheck true becomes elytra_movement_check false
  • disablePlayerMovementCheck true becomes player_movement_check false
  • disableRaids true becomes raids false
  • doFireTick is gone on Java 1.21.11+. The new fire_spread_radius_around_player limits how far fire spreads around players (default 128, 0 stops spreading, -1 is unlimited). It works differently, so test it before relying on it to protect a build. Bedrock still uses doFireTick.
  • spawnChunkRadius was removed in 1.21.9 with no replacement. Using it to keep spawn farms running? Check how spawn chunks behave on your version before updating.

FAQ

How do I turn on keepInventory?

Type /gamerule keepInventory true in chat (as an operator) or in your console. Use keep_inventory on Java 1.21.11+. No restart needed. You can also change it with Game Rules in the World Manager.

Can I change gamerules without commands?

Yes! Open World Manager in your panel, find your world under Your worlds, and click Game Rules.

Why is my gamerule command not working?

On Java 1.21.11+, the names changed, so check the table above. Type /gamerule with no rule name to see the names your version accepts. On Bedrock, make sure cheats are on.

How do I stop the day/night cycle?

Type /gamerule doDaylightCycle false (advance_time false on Java 1.21.11+). Want a set time? Run /time set noon or /time set midnight first. Set it back to true to restart the cycle.

How do I reset a gamerule?

There is no reset command. Set it back to its default by hand, like /gamerule randomTickSpeed 3. Each rule's default is listed on its card above.

Are gamerules saved per world?

Yes. Each world stores its own gamerules, and the Game Rules button in World Manager only changes the world you clicked.

Stuck on a gamerule? No worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly jump in and help.
