Configuring Your Killing Floor 2 Server

Most of what makes a Killing Floor 2 server feel like your own — its name, password, difficulty, wave count, and player limit — comes from a single config file. This guide walks through the settings you're most likely to want to change.

⚠️ Important Warning: Always stop your server on your MintServers panel before editing config files. Killing Floor 2 writes its current settings back to these files when it shuts down, so editing while it's running means your changes get overwritten.

Finding the Configuration File

Your server's main settings live in KFGame.ini, inside the KFGame/Config folder. This file doesn't exist until the server has been started at least once, since it's generated from the game's defaults on first launch.

📁 server (or your main server directory)
📁 KFGame
📁 Config
📄 LinuxServer-KFGame.ini (Click to edit this file)
  1. Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Browse into KFGame/Config and click on the config file to open it in the text editor.

Server Name and Admin Contact

These control how your server identifies itself in the server browser. Look for the [Engine.GameReplicationInfo] section:

📄 KFGame.ini
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]
ServerName=My Killing Floor 2 Server
ShortName=MyKF2
[email protected]

ServerName is what appears in the Steam server browser. AdminContact is optional and shows up alongside it so players can reach you.

Setting Passwords

Passwords are set under the [Engine.AccessControl] section:

📄 KFGame.ini
[Engine.AccessControl]
AdminPassword=yourAdminPasswordHere
GamePassword=yourJoinPasswordHere
  • AdminPassword is used to log in as an admin in-game or through WebAdmin.
  • GamePassword is required from anyone trying to join. Leave it blank for a public server.

Difficulty

Difficulty is set in the [Engine.GameInfo] section, using GameDifficulty:

📄 KFGame.ini
[Engine.GameInfo]
GameDifficulty=1
  • 0 — Normal
  • 1 — Hard
  • 2 — Suicidal
  • 3 — Hell on Earth
💡 Pro Tip: The game may rewrite this value with decimals, like GameDifficulty=1.000000. That's normal and doesn't change what it does — you can still just type a whole number when editing it yourself.

Game Length (Wave Count)

This is set in the [KFGame.KFGameInfo] section, using GameLength:

📄 KFGame.ini
[KFGame.KFGameInfo]
GameLength=1
  • 0 — Short (4 waves)
  • 1 — Normal (7 waves)
  • 2 — Long (10 waves)

Max Players

This one trips people up: there are two different MaxPlayers settings in this file, and editing the wrong one won't do anything.

📘 Note: For the default Survival game mode, the player cap comes from MaxPlayers under the [KFGameContent.KFGameInfo_Survival] section, not the MaxPlayers line under [Engine.GameInfo]. The Engine.GameInfo value is an engine-level default and isn't what actually limits a Survival server.
📄 KFGame.ini
[KFGameContent.KFGameInfo_Survival]
MaxPlayers=6

Survival supports up to 6 players. If you're running Versus Survival instead, the equivalent setting is MaxPlayers under [KFGameContent.KFGameInfo_VersusSurvival], which supports up to 12.

Map Rotation

Maps are controlled in the [KFGame.KFGameInfo] section:

📄 KFGame.ini
[KFGame.KFGameInfo]
bUseMapList=True
GameMapCycles=(Maps=("KF-BurningParis","KF-BioticsLab","KF-Outpost","KF-VolterManor","KF-Catacombs"))

bUseMapList tells the server to cycle through the list you provide instead of every installed map. List the maps you want in GameMapCycles, separated by commas, using their full KF- prefixed names.

Applying Your Changes

Save the file, then start your server back up from the Console tab for your changes to take effect. Most of these settings can also be changed on the fly through Killing Floor 2's built-in WebAdmin panel without editing files directly, if you'd rather manage things that way.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

  • Config file is missing: Start your server once first. The file is generated from the game's defaults on first launch and won't exist before that.
  • Changes aren't sticking: Make sure the server was fully stopped before you edited the file, not just restarting.
  • Max Players didn't change: Double-check you edited the MaxPlayers line under your game mode's section (like KFGameContent.KFGameInfo_Survival), not the one under Engine.GameInfo.
  • Custom maps aren't showing up in rotation: Confirm the map name in GameMapCycles matches the installed map's exact name, including the KF- prefix.

Once your settings are dialed in, your server will reflect them every time it starts. If you run into anything unexpected while editing your config, no worries! Just open a support ticket and our team will gladly help you sort it out.
