Which Java version do I need?

Minecraft	Java	Notes
1.8 – 1.11.2	Java 8	Forge for these versions only runs on Java 8.
1.12 – 1.16.5	Java 8 or 11	Paper and Spigot run on 11. Forge for 1.12.2 needs exactly Java 8.
1.17 – 1.17.1	Java 16	Java 17 works too.
1.18 – 1.20.4	Java 17	Newer Java usually works for vanilla and Paper. Older Forge may not.
1.20.5 – 1.21.11	Java 21
26.1 and newer	Java 25	Velocity also needs 25.

If Java is too old, the server stops with "UnsupportedClassVersionError".

How much RAM should I give my Minecraft server?

For a small vanilla or Paper server, 4 to 6 GB is enough. Modpacks usually need 6 to 10 GB.

Do Aikar's flags work on Java 21 and 25?

Yes. Every flag in the set still works on Java 8 through 26.

Java says "Unrecognized VM option". What now?

One of your -XX flags is misspelled or was removed from your Java version. Generate a fresh command above.
