Want to add mods to your Abiotic Factor server? There are two main types of mods on Nexus Mods: PAK mods, which are installed by uploading their files, and UE4SS mods, which also need a mod loader. This guide walks you through both, step by step.
- Mods from Nexus Mods are unofficial, and the game developers do not support them. Abiotic Factor's 1.5.0 update (Community Update #5) added official mod support and is expected to break most older mods.
- Only install a mod if its page says it works with the current version of the game.
- Install one mod at a time and test it before adding another.
- If your game crashes with a Fatal Error, remove your unofficial mods first.
Installing PAK Mods
PAK mods are made of three files ending in .pak, .ucas and .utoc. They do not need a mod loader.
- Download the mod from Nexus Mods and unzip it on your PC. Make sure you have all three files.
- Log into your MintServers panel and open the Backups tab on the left-hand sidebar to back up your server.
- Click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
- Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand sidebar.
- Browse to the following folder:
📁 AbioticFactor
📁 Content
📁 Paks (upload your mod files here)
📄 YourMod_P.ucas
📄 YourMod_P.utoc
- Upload all three mod files, keeping the file names exactly as they are. If the mod's page names a different folder, use that folder instead.
- Click Start and watch the Console tab. If a mod fails to load, it will show up in the server log.
Paks folder also contains the game's own files, pakchunk0-WindowsServer and global. Do not edit or delete them. Only add or remove your mod files.
Installing UE4SS Mods
UE4SS mods are Lua scripts that need the UE4SS mod loader, so they are a little more advanced than PAK mods. You only need to install UE4SS once.
- Log into your MintServers panel and click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
- On Nexus Mods, download the main file of UE4SS for Abiotic Factor, and also download
version.dllfrom itsOptional Files. Unzip the main file on your PC. - In the Files tab, browse to
AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64and upload theue4ssfolder and theversion.dllfile. You do not needdwmapi.dll. - Click Start. If UE4SS installed correctly, a
UE4SS.logfile will appear inside theue4ssfolder. Then click Stop again. - Download the UE4SS mod you want, unzip it on your PC, and make sure it is a server-side mod.
- Upload the mod's folder (the one containing a
Scriptsfolder) to theModsfolder shown below.
📁 AbioticFactor
📁 Binaries
📁 Win64
📁 ue4ss
📁 Mods (upload your mod folder here)
📄 mods.txt (Click to edit this file)
- Open
mods.txtin the sameModsfolder and add a new line at the bottom with your mod's folder name, followed by: 1. Use the exact folder name you uploaded, even if the mod's page names a different folder:
- Click the Save Content button at the top right of the file editor.
- Navigate back to the Console tab and click Start.
- To check your mod loaded, open
UE4SS.login theue4ssfolder and look for a line likeStarting Lua mod 'YourMod'.
Do Players Need The Mod Too?
It depends on the mod, so always read the mod's description on Nexus Mods. Some mods only need to be on the server, while others need to be installed on every player's PC as well.
If a mod needs to be on the players' side, each player must install the same files, from the same version, in their own game's Paks folder:
UE4SS mods that need to be on the players' side also require each player to install UE4SS on their own PC. Follow the instructions on the UE4SS and mod pages on Nexus Mods.
Mods from Nexus Mods are PC only, so console players cannot install them. If you have console players on your server, stick to mods that only need to be on the server.
Removing A Mod
To remove a PAK mod:
- Click the Stop button to safely shut down your server.
- Open the Files tab and browse to
AbioticFactor/Content/Paks. - Delete the mod's three files (
.pak,.ucasand.utoc). - Click Start.
Players who installed the mod on their own PC should delete the same files from their Paks folder.
To remove a UE4SS mod, stop your server, delete the mod's folder from AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods, remove its line from mods.txt, then click Start.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Common Mod Issues
Server won't start after a game update:Your mod is probably out of date. Stop the server, delete the mod's files from thePaksfolder, and wait for the mod's author to release an update.Mod doesn't seem to do anything:Make sure you uploaded all three files (.pak,.ucasand.utoc), kept the file names exactly as they were, and that the mod works on a server and not only on the player's side.Crashes or desync when joining:Make sure players have the same mod files and version as the server, and that the server and players' games are fully updated.UE4SS mod not loading:Check that the folder name inmods.txtmatches the uploaded folder exactly and that the line ends with: 1. Then look for errors inUE4SS.log.No UE4SS.log file after starting:Make sure theue4ssfolder andversion.dllfrom the main UE4SS download were uploaded directly intoAbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64, next to the server's.exefile, then start the server again.Fatal Error crash:Remove your unofficial mods from the server and from your PC, then try again with one mod at a time.
